Floods displaces about 1,000 households in Nyanza region

 

ABOUT 1,000 households have been displaced by floods following heavy rains witnessed in Nyanza region.

 

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa says the region has been experiencing above normal rainfalls.

 

Addressing the press at her Kisumu office, the Nyanza Regional Commissioner said some 6,302 people have been affected by the ongoing  heavy rains currently witnessed in Nyanza.

 

The Regional Commissioner has confirmed that one person has died as a result of the raging floods in Winam area within Kisumu County.

 

Mworoa says four counties namely Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori have been affected by the floods, adding that Kisii and Nyamira counties have not been affected by the floods.

 

The Regional Commissioner has urged the residents whose areas are flooded to move to safer grounds.

 

She says they are working together with the Kenya Red Cross so as to assist the victims affected by the floods within the region.

 

“We are also working with Western Hub which is a group of organizations providing aid to the families affected by the floods within Nyanza region and we have a collaboration with them,” the Regional Commissioner says.

 

She says the Group of the Organization gave them advisory on the onset of the heavy rains when they met three weeks ago.

 

The regional Commissioner says the advisory is that between March and end of May this year, Nyanza region will experience above normal rainfall.

 

She assures the residents of Nyanza that the construction of the Koru-Soin Multi-Purpose dam is on course, adding that it will be part of the solution to the flood menace in Kisumu and its environs.

 

During the press briefing, the Nyanza Regional Commissioner was accompanied by the Regional Security team.
