Ksm Scribes Plant trees, donates blood in Solidarity as World Press Freedom Day marked

The Kisumu Journalists Fraternity have planted trees in and public primary school and donated blood to a level Six  Hospital as they mark this Year’s World Press Freedom Day.

The Journalists representing three networks namely the Kisumu Journalists Network, Kenya Correspondents Association and the Lake Region Journalists Network worked in solidarity as they Mark this Year’s World Press Freedom Day with an aim serving the people during these events.

Addressing the Press in Kisumu at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, Kisumu Journalists Network Chairman Rushdie Oudia said the Journalists in Kisumu have come up with the initiative of donating the blood to help save lives and plant trees in order to protect the environment.

He says the scribes have been able to donate 36 pints of blood that will be stored at the Nyanza Regional Blood Transfusion Center that will go along way in saving lives.

“Our Target was 40 pints and of course many of us were not eligible because of one reason or the other. The numbers would have been higher. We are often first at scenes of tragedy but today, we choose to also be part of saving lives.” Oudia says.

Oudia has thanked the Journalists for the good gesture terming it a greater move.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Okise thanked the Kisumu Journalism Fraternity for planting the trees and donating blood for the facility.

He has re-affirmed the Facility’s commitment to an open-door policy, adding that the Journalists are invited to continue their role as watchdogs.

The Lake Region Journalists Network also planted a number of trees at MM SHAH Primary school as Kenya Correspondents Association joins their colleagues in the two exercises.

With a membership of above 100, the Kisumu Journalists Network, alongside the Kenya Correspondents Association and the Lake Region Journalists Network has proved that the power of the press extends far beyond the printed word and it lies in the pulse of the community they serve.
