KEPROBA unveils Japan Market Research Survey that presents many opportunities to Exporters

The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) has unveiled findings from a comprehensive Japan market survey, and launched a new exporter challenges tracking tool aimed at improving Kenya’s export competitiveness besides addressing barriers faced by exporters.

The Japan market survey was conducted between August and October 2025, providing insights into consumer preferences, import standards, market entry requirements and emerging opportunities in the Japanese market.

In a speech read on her behalf during a stakeholder forum on the dissemination of the survey findings in Kisumu on Monday, June 15, 2026, KEPROBA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Floice Mukabana noted that Kenya’s export sector remains a key driver of economic growth, employment, and foreign exchange earnings.

She says the research findings demonstrates that Japan present significant opportunities for Kenya particularly in sector like Avocado, Specialty Coffee, Macadamia nut, Tea, Cut Flowers, Sashimi-grade Tuna and niche services such as English Teaching.

She says the research further says such sectors are promising because they align with the Kenya’s comparative advantage and Japan’s demand for premium and highly quality goods.

The CEO further says however, accessing the Markets in Japan requires strict adherence to quality Standards, reliable supply chain, certification and reliability coupled with strong branding and Marketing position.

The CEO says one of the constraints affecting Export performance is lack of a coordinated system for identifying and resolving exporter challenges.

However, she adds that KEPROBA has developed an Exporter challenges Tracking tool that is designed to provide exporters with a platform to report challenges and facilitate systematic tracking of issues and track their solutions.

The other is to generate data to inform policy and decision making and to enhance coordination between Government and Private sector.

The Chief Executive Officer has however expressed concern over a widening trade deficit especially between Kenya and Japan, with exports growing by only 0.6 per cent in 2025 compared to a 2.5 per cent increase in imports, resulting in a trade gap of over Sh1.65 trillion.
