Rice farmers demonstrate against stalled Water project

Rice farmers at Masune Irrigation scheme in Wagunga village within Awasi/Onjiko ward of Kisumu County have peacefully demonstrated against what they have termed as a failed water project funded by the County Government of Kisumu.

The rice farmers claim that their 360 acres paddy fields are in jeopardy after a water rehabilitation project was being funded by the county Government of Kisumu stalled.

Addressing the press at the site, the farmers claim that the project that was being implemented by the County Government of Kisumu at an estimated cost of shs 3.5 million has now stalled and they now have no water to irrigate their rice.

The farmers claim that they risk making huge loses in the next one week if the rehabilitation, maintenance and opening of Wagunga scheme in Awasi/Onjiko ward is not fast tracked.

The rice farmers are further claiming that the engineer who is in charge of the project is arrogant and has since allegedly withdrew its service since February this year.

Led by Michael Sep, they farmers have threatened to move to court and sue the County Government of Kisumu over the alleged failed project.

They say the project which was meant to re-direct water to their rice farms should be completed within the shortest time for them to get good harvest from their farming activities.

They have now appealed to the Kisumu Governor to intervene and ensure the project is successfully completed.

“Our rice is already in flowering stage and it is at this time that we need water for them make the rice that we need. We therefore appeal to our Governor to ensure that we get this project done as soon as possible,” the farmers say.

They say that the project is one that the County Government of Kisumu gave them as rice farmers within the area, adding that it must be completed before the financial year ends.

The project is meant to cover two wards within Kisumu County namely Awasi/Onjiko and East Kano/Wawidhi ward.
