Kisumu County Assembly vets nominees for City Board.

THE County Assembly of Kisumu has commenced a vetting process to determine the suitability of 11 people whom Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o recently nominated to be members of the Kisumu City Management Board.

The Assembly led by its Speaker Onyango Oloo has begun to vet the 11 nominees after which a report will be tabled before the Assembly for adoption or rejection by the members of the County Assembly of Kisumu.

The Committee on Appointments of County Assembly of Kisumu is the one carrying out the vetting exercise and is comprised of both elected and nominated MCAs together with the Speaker and the Clerk of the County Assembly.

The Committee has so far vetted a total of six nominees who were taken through various questions ranging from integrity, finance and procurement issues among others as well as being asked on what they will do if appointed to the Kisumu City Management Board.

The first to be vetted in an exercise that yesterday kicked off at Kisumu’s Aga Khan hall was Prof. Larry Gumbe who said if appointed to the Board will ensure that there is proper planning of Kisumu City.

He said he will ensure that there is an integrated Development Plan for Kisumu City should he be appointed as a member of the Kisumu City Management Board.

Gumbe said if appointed as a member of the Board, he will also ensure there will be proper handling, collection and treatment of solid waste within Kisumu City.

He also stated that he will ensure there is expansion of sewerage treatment plant in Kisumu City as well proper treatment of the sewerage within the Lake side City.

Gumbe also said he will help in the development of Disaster Management Strategy for Kisumu City.
Charles Owoko Ochome who was also vetted on the first day said if elected as a member of the board will mobilize both local and foreign investments to come and invest in Kisumu City.

He said there should be peace and tranquility so as to help in attracting both local and foreign investments.

“I want to help in promoting Kisumu City as an investment destination with an aim of wooing both local and foreign investors if appointed to Kisumu City Management Board,” Ochome said.

He said there should be conducive environment which will allow for both foreign and local investments, adding that the people in Kisumu City should be talked to so as to embrace both local and foreign investments.

Others who were also vetted include Kennedy Obware Akoko, John Ombija, Elijah Adul and Rose Arungu Olende who all promised team work if appointed as members of the Board.

Today, the Committee on Appointment of County Assembly of Kisumu will vet the remaining five nominees namely Sagar Nichandrah Shah representing informal sector, Salim Farida Ahmed representing Private Sector and Sheila Adhiambo Okal representing neighborhood.

 Others are Former Mayor Sam Okello representing associations of town and Peris Ochola to represent professionals.

The Committee after vetting all the 11 nominees will this afternoon also hear petitions from members of the public concerning any issue which may bar any of the nominees from being appointed as members of the Kisumu City Management Board.

On April 12 this year, Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong'o nominated 11 people to be in the Kisumu City Management Board.

Individual member categories include Prof. Lawrence Gumbe, John Ombija, Obware Kennedy Akoko, Charles Owoko Ochome, Elijah Adul and Rose Arungu Olende.

Former Nominated Councilor who is also a former Mayor Sam Okello has been nominated to represent an association of towns while Sheila Okal has been nominated to represent registered neighborhood association.

Peris Ochola and Salim Farida Ahmed has been nominated to represent professionals and Private Sector respectively while Sagar  Nichandrah Shah has been nominated to represent informal sector.
