Four more people arrested following water meters’ theft in Kisumu.
FOUR more people have been arrested on the
issue of water meters’ theft in Kisumu.
Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company Managing
Director Thomas Odongo says police together with officers from the company arrested
the trio within Nyalenda Estate this morning on the issue of water meters
theft within the area.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms
today, the Company’s Managing Director said one scrap metal dealer has also
been arrested.
“Three more suspects and a scrap metal dealer were today morning arrested in Nyalenda
estate, pending being taken to court once police complete investigating the
matter,” said KIWASCO Managing Director Thomas Odongo, adding that the suspects
have been arrested in connection to theft of meters.
These arrests come barely two weeks after
the company raised an alert on increased theft of water meters to their
customers where it has used more than half a million to replace water meters
which have been stolen within various estates in Kisumu city.
Odongo says the company keeps losing
between 20-40 meters daily in the past one month.
He adds that the company is working
closely with the police and will not relent until theft of meters is eradicated
in Kisumu.
He strongly warns scrap metal dealers to
be wary and not take vandalized water meters sold to them by suspected
criminals engaging in this activity.
“I want to take my time and warn the scrap
metal dealers in Kisumu to be very careful not to purchase water meters which
have been vandalized in various estates in Kisumu City,” the Managing Director
adds.
The Managing Director urges customers to
keep guarding their meters against any form of theft.
He thanks members of the public who have
continuously given the company information that has led to the arrests of the
suspects.
Meanwhile, the Kisumu Water and Sewerage
Company has today awarded 10,000 to Benard Omondi Odhiambo for reporting theft
of water meters
Omondi who is a motocycle boda boda
operator and a caretaker in Kisumu received the cash award for reporting theft
of water meters in Lolwe estate two weeks ago.
The
suspect in the said stolen water meter had pleaded guilty after being arraigned
in court and has since been sentenced to two years imprisonment.
Another suspect who was reported stealing
water meters at Poly view estate has been arraigned at Winam court today to
answer charges.
