15 arrested
for washing vehicles within Lake Victoria in Kisumu after ban.
A TOTAL of 15 people have today been nabbed after they were
found washing vehicles within the beaches of Lake Victoria despite Kisumu Governor Prof.
Anyang Nyong’o banning the practice last Month during Jamhuri day celebration.
Kisumu County Executive Committee Member in charge of
Environment, Water and Sanitation Salmon Orimba says the 15 arrested
will be arraigned in Court on Monday next week to answer charges of carrying out illegal
car washing within the Lake Victoria.
Addressing the members of the press at his office in Kisumu
today, Orimba said the enforcement officers from the County Government of
Kisumu also impounded two motor vehicles and one tuk tuk which were being washed within the Lake Victoria region.
He says the vehicles and the tuk tuk were impounded at Kiboko Bay and Lwang’ni beaches within
the Lake Victoria.
Orimba says the issue of washing motor vehicles within the
various beaches of Lake Victoria has been cited as one of the major causes of
pollution in the Lake and must be stopped at all cost.
“As a department, we did a public notice after the Governor
gave an executive order banning the washing of motor vehicles but it seems
those people did not comply to the said notice hence went ahead to do their
business of washing motor vehicles in the Lake Victoria and we have now
arrested some,” Orimba says.
He says the Governor had already banned the issue and it
must stop with immediate effect, adding that they had asked those who are doing
the business to stop within the 48 hours upon giving out the public notice.
“The biggest issue is the water hyacinth which is currently
choking the Lake and its growth is enhanced by pollution of the lake
that increases the generation of the dreaded weed. One of the causes of
pollution in the Lake is through washing the motor vehicles,” he adds.
He says the arrest will continue until no one will be doing
such an illegal activity within the Lake, adding the public must desist from
such acts.
“EMCA Act talks about protection of water bodies by not
doing activities which can help in polluting the water bodies. This must be
adhered to strictly,” he further says.
He says the department is very much determined in ensuring
that no one is carrying out such an activity within the Lake.
