empowers Boda Boda riders, gives 175 motorbikes.
SOME Boda Boda Operators from 35 wards in Kisumu County have benefited from an initiative by Kisumu County women representative Rosa Buyu
through National Government Affirmative Action Fund [NGAAF}.
Buyu says this is an initiative meant to empower Boda Boda
riders who operate using motorbikes which they hire on a daily basis and pay
some money to the owners.
Addressing the residents in Kisumu at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground
today, Kisumu County Women Representative Rosa Buyu said those boda Boda
Operators will now become owners of the motorbikes through the initiative and
they will now not hire motorbikes to do their business of carrying passengers
on a daily basis and paying everyday.
“This is now an opportunity to empower the Boda Boda Riders
through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund and we are calling it
transforming lives and this is in line empowerment policy of the National
Government Affirmative Action Plan,” Buyu says.
She says most of the boda boda riders do own the Motorbikes
they operate with but the initiative will now enable them to own the
motorbikes.
Buyu says the initiative will now ensure that the daily
income for the boda boda operators is enhanced.
she adds that those getting 200 shillings daily home and between 400 to 500 shillings which they used to pay the motorbikes owners.

“This is an attempt to empower these people as we are giving
175 motorbikes across the county,” Buyu adds.
Buyu says NGAAF has paid a seed money of shs 20,000 per motorbike to the riders who are going to
use them.
She adds that the bulk of the money will be paid by the riders themselves on a weekly basis in a partnership between her office and car and general as the supplier of the Motorbikes.

She adds that the Boda Boda Operators will be organized in Community
Based Organizations within their wards, adding that this will enable them to be
more discipline and accountable.
She says the seed of Hope and the Unaitas Sacco have also
been roped in as the financiers to ensure that the project is successful.
She says the National Transport and Safety Authority has
also manage to educate the Boda Boda Riders of the safety on the road.
Two women Representatives Dr. Christine Ombaka of Siaya and
Beatrice Adagala of Vihiga County has appreciated the initiative, adding that they will replicate
it in their counties respectively.
