Employ adequate teachers for new Curriculum, Kuppet tells Govt.

THE Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers {KUPPET} has urged the Government to immediately employ more teachers in primary and secondary schools across the country so as to help in implementing the new Education system that has been rolled out this term.

Kisumu County KUPPET Executive Secretary Zablon Awange says there is no way the new Curriculum known as Competence Based Curriculum {CBC} can be successfully implemented without employing more teachers to help in spearheading it.

Addressing the press at his office today, Awange said the employment of teachers both in Primary and secondary should be done as from next month of February without fail.

He says those teachers who will be employed should also be taken for in service courses on the new curriculum that will help them implement it competently.

“Once the Government has decided to roll out the new curriculum the way it has decided then the next thing is to immediately employ more teachers to help in implementing this,” Awange says.

He says the shortage of teachers across the country is very huge and this needs to be addressed by employing the teachers.

“After employing these teachers to implement the new curriculum, the Government should embark on ensuring that they are giving the correct training through in service course,” Awange adds.

On the issue of books for the new Curriculum which has just been rolled out should be duly approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.

He adds that only the right books which have been approved by the KICD should be used to implement the new education system.

“The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development should liaise with the publishers to so as to check that only the right books are published and approved for the new curriculum,” Awange further says.

He says already some books have been detected to have misleading content which is not good for the learners.

“The government should demand that the list of books to be published for the new curriculum be available. Teachers who are specialized in those subjects should also be fully involved to see whether the right content and concept have been captured,” Awange adds.

Awange adds that all those publishers who have been found to be publishing books which have not been approved by KICD should be banned from doing their businesses.

Meanwhile, Schools in Kisumu have started receiving books for the new curriculum that has been rolled out this year.

Schools like Rabuor, Victoria, M M Shah and Central Primary schools among others have received the books from the Ministry of Education for the new education system.

Victoria Primary School Head Teacher Edward Omalla confirmed that his school has received the books.

He says grade ones pupils 163 English Activities and Kiswahili 163 while grade two has received both 176 Kiswahili and English.

Grade three received 172 books last year while upper classes which is class seven and eight received Mathematics, English and Science last year of 2018.
