Kisumu City to use Nyumba Kumi approach in solid waste management.
THE Kisumu City is set to use the Nyumba Kumi approach in managing the solid waste within the various
estates in the City.
Kisumu City Manager Doris Ombara says they have embarked on
using this approach used in Estates by the national Government in taking care
of security issues within the estates where ten households are put together so
as to help addressing security issues within their area by ensuring that they
know their neighbours.
Addressing a solid waste management stakeholders’ meeting at
Kisumu City Hall today, Ombara said the Nyumba
Kumi Initiative in managing the solid waste within the various estates of
the city will involve various stakeholders who are majorly residents within the
estates of Kisumu City in managing the solid waste.
Ombara says the initiative will ensure that 70% of the 500
metric tons of solid waste will be collected through such an approach, adding
that currently only 30 percent of this is collected.
“Only 30 percent of the about 500 metric tons generated
within the Kisumu City is collected and we need to collect the remaining 70
percent,” Ombara says.
She says initiative has identified units comprising of ten households
in various estates which will be used in collecting and managing the garbage
within their areas, adding that peer education will also be key.
Ombara says that the initiative will ensure that each
household delivers the garbage to where they are needed, adding that the
initiative is set to kick off soon.
She says the various stakeholders identified so far include
the Members of the County Assemblies, Ward Administrators, Chiefs and their
Assistants among others, adding that their input is very much critical in this
process.
Ombara adds that there is no overnight solution towards the
issue of waste management, adding that a concerted effort is really needed.
She says one private waste collector will be attached to the
ten households who will be engaged in this initiative.
She says the private waste collectors will be paid for the
services they will provide when handling this issue.
“Instead of wasting money treating the diseases caused by
poor collection of garbage, such money should be used to properly collect and
manage the garbage within the city,” Ombara adds.
Ombara adds that most of the drainage system within the city
is being blocked by solid waste especially diapers among others.
