Convention Center for Africities kicks off in Kisumu
The Construction of multi-billion facility in Kisumu has kicked
off as a sure sign that the ninth Edition of Africities Summit will be held in
the Lake side city next year in April.
The Convention Center which has a strong connection with the Western
Kenya Tourism Circuit has a modern design.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who has officiated
the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Convention Center
within the Agricultural Society of Kenya Show Ground at Mamboleo said the
Conference will also have economic connections within the inter land and will
have an estimated shs 1.4Billion.
Wamalwa says the Center is going to be a true icon in within the
Western Kenya and beyond.
He says the construction is expected to be completed before the
end of the year for the summit to be held within it on April 26 to 30, 2022.
The CS says the national Government if fully committed in
ensuring that the ninth edition of Africities Summit is held in Kisumu next
year as planned.
“The President is keen on the forthcoming Africities summit is
successfully held in Kisumu,” he says.
He says this will be the first time the summit will be held in a
city which is not a capital city of a country and this is an achievement to the
country.
“Kisumu will be first intermediary City to host the Africities
summit next year and this is a great achievement indeed,” Wamalwa adds.
Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o says the
groundbreaking of the convention Centre marks the end of the planning process
and ushers in the implementation stage to the Africities Summit in April 2022.
He says the construction of the Centre will not only
be a befitting legacy of the Africities Summit to the County and the Lake
Region Economic Bloc as a whole but will also enhance immensely the County’s
capacity to attract international business meetings and business tourism,
greatly increasing economic activity in the region.
Charles Konyango, the design Team leader for the project
from the Ministry of Devolution says the Conference will have a capacity of
between 3,000 to 4,000 people at the main auditorium.
With the ground breaking ceremony for the project in Kisumu,
this now shows that preparation for the hosting of the 9th edition of the
Africities Summit to be hosted in Kisumu City is on the home stretch.
The organizers are said to have weathered various storms in the
cause of the planning journey caused by the raving effects of the corona virus
sweeping through the globe.
The planning committees have navigated through those challenges
to put forth a plan that will make this great country deliver the most
memorable summit and the first in an intermediary city.
The convention centre is expected to be the fulcrum upon which
investments in the western region will be positioned.
Kisumu region is well on course to play in the same league with
Uganda and Rwanda in attracting business tourism.
