I will surely protect devolution in Senate, SC Ojienda vows

A SENATORIAL Aspirant has vowed to fully defend and protect devolution should he be elected as the next Senator for Kisumu County during the next year’s August polls.

Senior Counsel Professor Tom Ojienda says his main aim why he wants to vie for the Kisumu County Senatorial seat come next year August is to be a protector and great defender of devolution as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the County Government Act of 2012.

Prof Ojienda who has declared his interest for the seat on Orange Democratic Movement {ODM} Party ticket says as a lawyer of international repute, he has what it takes to represent Kisumu County as its third Senator in the Senate.

Addressing a media Breakfast meeting in Kisumu today, Prof Ojienda said he is in the Orange Democratic Movement {ODM} Party to stay since he is a life member of the party and will participate in its nomination process while seeking its ticket to be its Senatorial candidate for Kisumu County.

Ojienda says he is very much comfortable with any method the party will resolve to choose its candidates during the nomination exercise.

“I will be very much comfortable with any method our party ODM will put in place to carry out the nomination exercise be it direct one or  the use of delegates for such an important exercise,” Ojienda says.

The law scholar also says he will ensure that it oversight how the next County Government of Kisumu will be appropriating the funds allocated to it from the National Government, adding  that oversight is a very important exercise by the Senate to the devolve system of government.

He says he has set his eyes to contest the seat, adding that he will not vie for any other elective position other than that of the Kisumu County Senate.

“I am set to vie for the position of the senator Kisumu County and I am not for any other position. This is what I am out to vie for,” Ojienda adds.

Ojienda who has declared  that he is ready to square it out with his opponents during the ODM Party primaries come next  year stated categorically that he is not someone’s else project for the Kisumu County Senatorial Seat.

In Kisumu County, already a number of aspirants have declared their interest for the Senatorial seat during the next year’s polls in August.

They include Senior Counsel Professor Tom Ojienda, current nominated Senator Rose Nyamunga, Philip Pande, Former Muhoroni Member of Parliament Prof Ayiecho Olweny among others.

They have declared their interests to vie for the seat on an Orange Democratic Movement {ODM} Party ticket where they will first square it out on during its primaries to be held next year.

They seek to replace the current Fred Outa who was elected during the 2017 General election and has since declared his interest to vie for the Governor’s seat come next year on ODM Party ticket.

Senator Outa seeks to dethrone the current Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o who was elected during the 2017 polls.

The other aspiring Governor is Ken Obura who is currently the Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of East African Community.

All the three and others are expected to square it out during the ODM Party primaries slated for next year while wanting to be its flag bearer.
