ACK Mothers Union
calls for establishment of more safe Houses on issues of GVB
A MOTHERS’ union within the Anglican Church of Kenya has
called on the Government to consider putting up more safe houses so as to help
secure those who have undergone Gender Based Violence across the country.
The ACK mothers Union at Saint Stephens Cathedral are saying
there are still a lot of challenges in having enough safe houses to secure the
victims of Gender Based Violence.
Addressing the Press in Kisumu today during the 16 days of
Activism against Gender Based Violence held at St Stephens ACK Cathedral to
commemorate this day with some of the victims of GBV, the Mothers Union in
partnership with Soroptimist International said they are against the GBV across
the country.
Jane Raburu says the Mothers Union Members are doing some
activities to ensure that the cases of Gender Based Violence reduced within the
region.
Raburu says a number of such cases go unreported and urged
for the reports to be made to the Gender Based Violence desks at the Police
stations.
Raburu who also represented an organization known as
Soroptimist International said some cases have been identified and are being
followed for actions to be taken against the suspected perpetrators.
Hellen Ondiek working at the Mothers Union Department of the
ACK at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Kisumu says they are carrying out sensitization
programs to ensure that cases of Gender Based Violence are reduced.
She says they will carrying on with such exercise to ensure
that such cases are minimal within the society.
Ondiek has called upon both the National and County
Governments to move with speed and put up more safe houses so as to cater for
the cases of GBVs within the region.
She has also urged other likeminded partners to chip in and
help on the issue of putting up safe houses.
“We need safe spaces in Kisumu because it is a reality that
the cases of Gender Based Violence are still with us,” she says.
Nancy Nyagaya Chairlady of the ACK Mothers Union says they
are planning to come up with a counselling center for the victims of the GBV.
She says there is need to re-assure the victims of GBV that
there is always life to be led after such an unfortunate ordeal, adding that no
hope should be lost at all.
Nyagaya who is also the President of Soroptimist
International says there is still room for networking on the issue of addressing
Gender Based Violence within the society.
