Need to have legislation on Gender mainstreaming in Kisumu

There is need for the County Assembly of Kisumu to enact legislation on Gender Mainstreaming.

Executive Director of Kenya Female Advisory Organization {KEFEADO} Easter Oketch says this will greatly help in ensuring the issue of gender mainstreaming policy that has been launched in the county is fully backed when such legislation is put in place.

Addressing the press during today’s launch of the Gender mainstreaming policy in Kisumu County, Oketch says this is a very important step to ensure that the gender agenda is going to be applied.

She says the act when enacted will create a legal framework to help in applying the issues of gender within Kisumu County.

Oketch says such Gender mainstreaming policy coupled with the enactment of the law will be a step forward, adding that it will ensure that equity and equality are met during the various process like the budget making process among other issues.

She says such a policy and legislation will also greatly help in the employment issues where the Kisumu County Public Service apply equity and equality on issues of employment.

She urges both the Executive and legislative wing of the County Government of Kisumu to fast track the process of legislation and its enactment.

“This is a step forward for us as a county to ensuring that as we move forward we will implement the document in total and make sure that it is put into practice,”

Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Elisha Jack Oraro assured the public of the Assembly’s support in such matters, adding that it is fully committed to ensure that such legislation are debated, passed and enacted into law for the interests of the public.

During the event, the Organization also gave gender awards to various people who have been champions on gender issues and urged them to carry on with such duties within the society.
