Govt directs chiefs to give all the
uncollected IDs for voter registration
The Ministry of Interior and
National Government Coordination has directed Chiefs and their assistants in
the Nyanza region to ensure all the uncollected Identity Cards are given out in
readiness for the next registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries
Commission (IEBC) next year.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred
Matiang’i says there are over 50,000 uncollected IDs and the national
government administrators must take the lead and find the owners within Nyanza
region.
Matiang’i says chiefs and their
assistants are the face of the national government at the grass root level
hence must ensure that Government services required at the grass root level
reaches the residents.
Speaking in Nyakach Sub County today during
the unveiling of the new Central Nyakach Division, the Cabinet Secretary said it is important for
every eligible voter to take part in the 2022 general elections thus the need
to give out the IDs.
The CS says the next roll out of
voter registration by IEBC must find when all the uncollected IDs are with
their owners by that time.
Matiang’i says voting is a
fundamental right which must be protected by giving every eligible voter to
cast their vote.
He has directed the administrators
to aid in giving out IDs to those who attain 18 years of age so that they can
apply for a voter's card and voter during next year’s polls in August.
He further noted that as a security
team, they are ready to deliver a peaceful election next year.
Matiang’i says the preparedness by
the security agencies will deliver a peaceful election.
“We have canceled our leaves during
this festive season to protect Kenyans,” he added
The CS says no government agency
will be intimidated while carrying out their mandates to ensure a peaceful
country during the electioneering period.
Matiang’i says President Uhuru
Kenyatta has directed them to do their work and dismissed those accusing the
administrators of meddling in politics to stop.
He adds that he will follow the
President's directive since the country must be led from one front.
“Is there a homestead being run by
two people?,” he asked.
He says they will work in
coordination and will not listen to any noise that discredits their work.
He says the peace of the country is
paramount and security agencies must be loyal to their country while
discharging their work.
Matiang’i says the handshake
between President Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga has brought peace
which will be cherished for many years to come.
