Estimated 70M Euros Water and Sanitation Project in Kisumu in the offing

A MEGA water and Sanitation project aimed rehabilitating and extending water supply systems within Kisumu City and other satellite towns is set to be implemented within the region.

The program is co-financed by French Development Agency (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB), European Union (EU) and the Government of Kenya to the tune of 70M Euros and is to be implemented by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation through the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.

 

Addressing the press in Kisumu today during a public participation meeting on Draft Water Resources and Water Master Plan for Kisumu County, the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency Acting Chief Executive Officer Chrispin Juma said other satellite towns set to benefit in the project include Maseno, Daraja mbili and Kiboswa.

 

He says the project will also expand sanitation facilities to mitigate pollution of the environment within Kisumu City and the mentioned satellite towns.

 

The Chief Executive Officer says it will increase water supply coverage from 67% to 90% by extending and rehabilitating existing network as well as increasing sewerage coverage in Kisumu City from current 16% to 45% thereby reducing pollution of the Lake.

 

He adds that this is to be done through expansion of collection, transmission and treatment infrastructure Reduce high Water loss/leakages from 45% due to old pipeline networks to 25%

 

 He says the other issue is that of preparing the Master plans for Water Resource and Wastewater to guide future developments in the water sector within the region.

 

He further says it will also Increase access to water and sanitation in Low Income Areas of Manyatta, Obunga and Nyalenda among others.

 

The project plans to implement the following activities that include Construction of 107 kilometers of water supply distribution System within the city, extending to Satellite towns of Maseno and Kiboswa.

 

The other one is construction of 70 kilometers of sewerage network within the Kisumu City as well as developing new Sewerage Treatment works and collection system at Otonglo to collect and treat 8,000m3/day of wastewater.

 

 Preparing Water Resources and Wastewater Management Master Plan for Kisumu City and Kisumu County as well as provision of Technical Assistance to KIWASCO to reduce Non-Revenue Water from 45% to 20% are also part of the project’s plan. The other one is to carry out Capacity Building.

 

The tendering for works package one which include Water and Wastewater Network Extensions, Rehabilitation and Sewer Connections) is said to be ongoing with commencement of works expected in March next year.

The Design for works package two including additional Water Network Extension, Improvement Works on Dunga Intake and Water Treatment Plant including Nyalenda Ponds is also said to be ongoing too as well as prequalification of contractors is ongoing and construction works expected to commence in August, 2022

 

The feasibility Study is ongoing for Works Package three that include Otonglo Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewerage network and Works execution expected to commence in September of the year 2023.

 

The Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency through the support of French Development Agency (AFD) and Government of Kenya has implemented projects within the City of Kisumu that has significantly improved water and sanitation access.

 

 Due to rapid population growth and being the regional economic, commercial and transport hub of the Western region, Kisumu City faces challenges to cope with increased demand for improved water and sanitation services.  

 

In order to address emerging gaps in water and sanitation and achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for water and sanitation in Kisumu {LVWATSAN} program has been launched.
