Foundation trains widows on how to be self-reliant

A Number of widows in West Kenya region have been undergoing trainings on how to be self-reliant while taking care of their families.

Springs Community Empowerment Foundation has been running trainings of widows within Siaya, Kisumu and parts of Western Region while sensitizing them to engage in income generating activities so as to take care of the family as sole bread winners.

Addressing about 200 widows within East Kano/ Wawidhi ward in Nyando Constituency, the Foundation’s Director Reverend Canon Margaret Auma  said a number of widows across the country have not been empowered hence the need to ensure that they are on the know on how they can survive.

Auma says most widows have been neglected and lack information for empowerment making a number of them to depend on other people for their survival.

Rev. Canon Auma has underscored the need to keep on empowering widows across the country on various issues that include succession of their late husbands’ property.

The Director says the Foundation has been organizing a one day conference for the widows, adding that already seven of them  have been conducted in various parts of Siaya, Kisumu and parts of Western Kenya particularly Butere area.

She says a number of widows who have been trained now have a changed mind where they have embraced that they should not be depending on someone for their survival.

“A number of widow whom we have trained now have positive mind and they now agree that they can also get to do any income generating activities for their survival and not to depend on other people for the survival of their family,” Rev. Canon Auma says.

She says it is possible for the widows to get into organized groups and access various funds like women enterprise funds so as to be financially empowered while carrying out income generating activities within the community.

Auma says the Foundation has also been getting some lawyers to offer free legal services to some widows who have been having various disputes that include their land taken by relatives after the death of their spouses and they have gotten help on such matters.

Wilfrida Auma Bwana says the trainings she has received has been an eye opener to her as a widow, adding that it has given her opportunity to be in an organized group with other fellow widows to champion for their interest in the society.

She says through their Kadika Widows Self Help Group, they have been engaging in a number of meaningful activities that include farming aimed at improving their livelihoods.

She says their aim is to empower those who have been widowed at tender age so as to cope up and survive within the community.

Josiah Adiema Adiema, Programs Coordinator for a Community Based Organization Known as Community Podium Initiative says empowering widows is a very noble initiative which should be encouraged at all cost.

Adiema says a number of widows have been neglected and their issues not being tackled within the Community hence the need to scale up their empowerment.

Adiema has encouraged the widows to be together and pull up resources altogether to be self-reliance.

The training has been a partnership between Springs Community Empowerment Foundation and the Community Podium Initiative.
