Parents told to guard their children against SGBV

 

PARENTS across the country have been urged to take good care of their children during this festive season against Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

 

Head of MOA Advocates LLP Lawyer James Aggrey Mwamu says a number of things normally happens during such festive season like Christmas hence parents have been advised to be on the look out and take care of their children to guard them against any mischieve that may include being sexually abused.

 

He says the lives of children must be fully protected so that they become people who can really build the society in future.

 

Addressing the survivors of the Sexual and Gender Based Violence victims at the Community- Fighting against GBV and HIV/AIDS{CFAGHS} at Kisumu’s Migosi Estate where the MOA Advocates and Mwalimu James Japheth Mwamu Foundation went to sensitize the community on the Legal aspects in regards to sexual and gender based violence, Lawyer Mwamu said a time has come when the community must come out and fight against sexual and Gender based violence.

 

Mwamu says the MOA Advocates are out to make up a follow up to some of the cases in court on issues of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, adding  that in some scenarios they will offer free legal services to members of the community so as to sensitize them on what the laws says about Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

 

A senior Associate at MOA Advocates LLP Lawyer Yvonne  Awuor Ogolla  says they have taken up some matters about the young girls who have been sexually abused, defiled and molested and sexually harassed.

 

“We have legally advised these girls who have been sexually abused some even by their relatives and taken up some matters which we will pursue to their conclusion to ensure that justice is not only done but also seen to be done,” Ogolla says.

 

She says they will offer free legal services on some matters that  have been brought before them on the issues of Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

 

Maurice Oloo, Director at the Community Fighting against GBV and HIV/Aids  says they have been dealing with the issues those who have survived on Sexual and Gender based Violence.

 

He says currently they are handling 30 cases about teenage girls who have been sexually abused, adding that the biggest challenge they face is lack of legal representation of the complainants  to these case.

 

Sexual and Gender Based Violence[SGBV} is a violence that targets women,men, girls  and boys based on their gender. It includes but mot limited to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.
