Clergy condemns killings in Anti-IEBC demos.
A section of clergy in Nyanza has strongly condemned
the killings of people during the anti-IEBC demonstrations in parts of Nyanza
and the country.
Under banner of the Nyanza Council
of Church Leaders, the Clergy led by their Chairman Archbishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo
Ngede say that it is not right for the anti-riot police to kill peaceful
demonstrators.
In a signed press statement by three
official of the Council Dr. Ngede,Reverend Joab Othatcher secretary General and Vice
Chair Archbishop Julius Otieno Oloo, the clergy has termed the act by the
police as barbaric and uncalled for.
“As the Clergy in Nyanza under the
Nyanza Council of Church Leaders we condemn in the strongest term possible the
act of extra judicial killing by the anti riots police in some parts of Nyanza
including Kisumu where a young school boy aged 18 who is a KCSE Candidate at
Vihiga Boys High school was yesterday shot dead by the police in Kondele area
and police allegedly removed the bullet from his body and chased away the crowd
who wanted to offer help,”they say.
They also condemn the act of police where they
reportedly shot on the shoulder a two year old girl in Nyamasaria area on
Monday.
“Recently, three people were killed
in Bondo town by the police last Friday and a 73 year old woman was also shot
and injured in Migori County. We therefore say that such acts should stop
forthwith,” they add.
The clergy say police should arrest
those breaking the law during the peaceful demonstrations and take such
suspects to the court instead of killing them.
“If demonstrators are going out of
hand, the police should chase them away from the central business district
where they are not needed and not follow them up to their areas of residence breaking
doors and beating them,” they further say.
They have also appealed to the
youths and those who are demonstrating to do so peacefully in accordance to the
law and not to barricade roads or burn tyres on the roads coupled with taxing
motorist.
They have sent a passionate appeal
to the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinet to institute an immediate
investigation into the killing of innocent citizens who are unarmed.
They have also taken up issues with
the Independent Policing Oversight Authority {IPOA} for not doing anything
despite police being accused of killing innocent citizens.
“To our surprise the brutal killings
started in Nairobi Mathare area, University of Nairobi and some parts of
Nyanza, we have not heard any word from independent policing oversight
authority (IPOA) investigating the killing by the police and take necessary
actions,” they add.
