Police in Kisumu runs out of
tear gas as Anti-IEBC Protests kicks off.
POLICE in Kisumu were forced to retreat to their stations
after they allegedly ran out of tear gas to lob on anti-IEBC protesters who
thronged the various streets in Kisumu wanting the Commission’s Chief Executive
Officer Ezra Chiloba to go home ahead of this month’s repeat Presidential Polls.
The officers were seen retreating to Kondele and Kisumu
Central Police station after the tear gas they were using allegedly ran out of
stock from their vehicles.
This scenario made a section of protesters to start pelting
the ant-Riot police officers with stones using slings thereby forcing the
officers to scamper for their safety while heading back to their various stations.
Anti-Riot police officers who were manning the roundabout
near Kisumu boys High School were forced to retreat to Kisumu Central Police station as
protesters pelted their vehicle with stones but did not cause any damage to the vehicle.
This has happened as police engaged the protesters in a
running battle lasting several hours while throwing tear gas canisters at the
protesters and firing some live bullets in the air.
The protestors begun their anti-IEBC demo in Kondele area
where they allegedly overpowered the police and managed to come up to the City
center.
Police were forced to us live bullets which they fired
severally in the air to repulse the big crowd estimated to be more than 3,000.
Police later got more tear gas from the police stations and
went back to the streets where they managed to contain the crowd and repulsed
them from the city center to the outskirts of the city.
Various Political Leaders from Kisumu County have condemned
what they termed as use of excessive force by the police to quell the anti-IEBC
protests.
Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili led the leaders in
condemning the action of police which has used live bullets to scare away the
Anti-IEBC protestors.
Kisumu county Senator Fred Outa has said that they have just
begun the anti-IEBC demos and will hold another one this Friday so as to force
the commission’s CEO out of office.
Outa said they will not relent until their demands are met
and the said IEBC officers are out of the office ahead of this October 26
repeat Presidential polls.
