There is need to do
di-silting of rivers in Kisumu County to control floods.
There is need to di-silt the various rivers in Kisumu County
so as to help in controlling floods within the county.
Kabonyo/Kanyagwal ward representative Oiko Pete says this
will greatly help in controlling the flood menace which is ever witnessed
within some parts of the county during long and short raining seasons.
Addressing the press in Kisumu to explain the predicament of
his electorates whom most have been affected by flash floods caused by the
rains witnessed for two days, Pete said there are a number of rivers within the
area which needs proper di-siltation so as to help in the control of floods.
Oiko says the recent rains witnessed within various parts of
the county including his ward has greatly affected a number of people as a
result of the flash flood.
The Member of Kisumu County Assembly says the rivers which
needs prompt di-siltation by the County Government include River Orije which is
within the boundary of Kabonyo Kanyagwal and Kobura wards.
He says others include River Miriu Kokwayo, Miriu Orecha and
River Aguko all within the Ward should also be properly di-silted so as to help
water flow easily to the Lake Victoria.
Pete says the County Government of Kisumu set aside funding
for the di-silting of rivers under the special programs docket.
The MCA says di-silting is the only way forward to help in
controlling the flood menace.
He adds that there are various canals which should also be
dug for easy flow of water to the Lake Victoria.
He says already the Special program from the County
Government and the Kenya Red cross has done a survey on the issue of floods
within the area.
“I am appealing to those organizations which can come and
help the flood victims within this ward as a result of this flood,” he says.
