Counties told to come up with policies mainstreaming issues of PWDs.

County Governments across the country have been urged to come up with policies aims at mainstreaming issues of persons with disabilities within their counties.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani says it is high time the counties work towards mainstreaming issues of persons with disabilities within their work force at the county government level.

Addressing the gathering today during the International day for persons with disabilities in Kisumu, the CS said all the Counties should come up with policies and legislative framework to help in mainstreaming issues of Persons with Disabilities.

He says such policies and legislative framework will greatly help in institutionalizing the mainstreaming agenda of persons with disabilities in the counties on their working programs.

“Disability is a cross cutting issue hence needs a multi-sectorial approach to address it and I urge the county Governments to mainstream issues of People with Disabilities in their undertakings,” he says.

The Cabinet Secretary has hailed the County Government of Kisumu for passing and operationalizing it.
“I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the County Government of Kisumu under Prof Anyang Nyongo for the passage and operationalizing the Disability Act in Kisumu County,” he adds.

The Cabinet Secretary says the Government will continue work together on the issues of inclusion of issues of Persons with Disabilities across the country.

Yatani says the issue of Access to Government Procurement has set aside 5 percent of the tenders to be given to persons with disabilities.

He says the Government plans to incorporate the transport system in the country to be disability friendly.

Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has promised to ensure his county government take a leading role in mainstreaming issues of people with disabilities having passed and now operationalizing the Disability Act.

He says already his County Government has begun mainstreaming issues of persons with disability.
Nyong’o says the issue of cultural bias against people with disability should be fought at all cost.

“As a County Government, we are ready with the issue of mainstreaming the issues of persons with disability and this is clearly evident by us passing and now operationalizing the Disability Act,” Nyong’o says.
