Luo Elders castigate
heckling about Industrial park in Kisumu.
A SECTION of the Luo Council of Elders have castigated the
move by some rowdy youth who heckled Opposition Leader Raila Odinga on the
issue of Special economic zone project in Kisumu on Monday this week.
The Elder led the Luo Council of Elder’s Vice Chairman in
Kisumu County Mzee Christopher
Ojienda, said the move was uncalled for hence the need to ensure
that no one tries to block development that comes to Nyanza region by heckling.
Addressing the press in Kisumu at Ofafa Memorial Hall,
the elders said a project of such magnitude will not only be an economic boost
to the region but also help in changing lives of the local communities staying
around the area and beyond.
Ojienda said it is very unfortunate that some politicians
managed to allegedly organize for such acts of hooliganism hence led to the
heckling and booing the Opposition leader in presence of three Cabinet
Secretaries who accompanied him during the tour.
Ojienda said politicians should not misuse the youth in
causing chaos at functions where development matters are discussed, adding that
the youth should be led into the right direction by showing them good manners.
“We condemn with full force what some youth did at Ombeyi on
Monday this week when they heckled Opposition Leader Raila Odinga who brought
the issue of Industrial Park under the Special Economic Zone,”Ojienda said.
He said those who are opposed to the bringing in of
development in Nyanza region are against the elders within the region and this
is unacceptable.
Elder Odungi Randa said Nyanza region needs development and
anyone who is against any form of meaningful development coming to Nyanza
region will not be allowed to block such.
Randa said the political class in the region should come out
and tell on who organize such an awkward act.
“We need development in our area because Nyanza region has
really lagged behind in terms of development hence the need not to block any
form of meaningful development,” Randa said.
Randa has called upon the Police to investigate and take to
court those who participated in such what he has termed as an uncouth act.
Luo Council of Elders Secretary in Kisumu County Nick Atieno
said people should never interfere with
development matters coming to the region.
Elder Charles Ondere said the issue of Handshake is really
helping to now bring issues of development in Nyanza region hence none should
not oppose development in any way.
Mary Nyaji, the organizing secretary of the Council said the
issue of development should be embraced at all cost, adding that the youth
should not allow some politicians to misuse them.
