LVBC to build phase one of its headquarters in Kisumu at estimated cost of 1.35M US Dollars.

THE Lake Victoria Basin Commission is set to build its Headquarters in Kisumu City at an estimated cost of 1.35 Million United States Dollar.

The Commission’s Executive Secretary Ali Said Matano says this has been secured from the East African Community Secretariat towards the construction of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission’s Headquarters in Kisumu during its first phase.

Addressing participants during the 20th meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers of the Lake Victoria Basin in Kisumu today, Matano said this is a good achievement for the commission.

He says the Commission will now embark of the construction of its headquarters within Kisumu City in a land which has been identified for the project.

Dr. Matano says already plans are at advanced stage to kick off the construction work of the Commission’s Headquarters.

“I want to appreciate the immediate former Chairperson of the sectoral Council of Ministers from the Republic of Uganda. During the two tenure as the chair, a lot of achievements were made including securing the USD 1.35M for the headquarters’ construction,” Dr. Matano says.

He added that the other achievement is about securing of over USD 3.7M from the Nordic Development Fund for promoting private sector engagement in Green Growth.

Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development Ken Obura who also attended the meeting confirmed the Kenyan Government’s commitment towards the various development within the East African Community.

Obura adds that already the Government of Kenya has provided the land freely towards the construction of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission’s Headquarters in Kisumu.

He said that the land was given to the Commission nearly ten years ago for the construction of its Headquarters in the Lakeside city of Kisumu.

“I am pleased to note the decision of the Council of Ministers to avail funds for the construction of the first phase of LVBC headquarters which has taken over a decade despite having been given a free plot by the Kenyan Government to construct a place they can call home,” CAS Obura says.

He adds that already the LVBC has plans at an advanced stage to start the construction work for its Headquarters, adding that they are looking forward for the ground breaking ceremony soon.

Obura at the same time reiterated the Kenyan Government’s full commitment to the regional cooperation process, adding that it will continue supporting projects and programs implemented in the basin for the benefits of the citizenry of the East African Community.

 “As I conclude, I want to urge all of us to actively contribute to the deliberations and provide clearer policy direction for the better management of the Lake Victoria Basin and its benefits,” Obura says.

According to information available at the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, the Government of Kenya donated a piece of prime land along the lake shores of area 2.8 hectares which is valued at USD 560,000.
