THE County Government of Kisumu has embarked on distributing learning materials worth about shs 25million to all Early Childhoods Education Centers across the seven Sub-Counties within the county.

Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o says this year’s distribution of learning materials which comprise of both text books and exercise books to all the Public Early Childhood Development Centers{ECDC} constitute to shs 5 million more unlike the last distribution that was shs 20 million.

Addressing the press at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground today when he presided over the distribution of the learning materials to ECDCs in three Sub-Counties, Governor Nyong’o said a total 130,820 exercise books and 24,459 text books will be distributed to all the ECDCs in Kisumu County.

“In this particular distribution, we are going to distribute a total of 130, 820 exercise books and 24,459 text books across the seven sub counties. All these we have managed to undertake with Kshs. 25 million an increase of 5 million from the last distribution,” Nyong’o said in a press statement.

Nyong’o says as a county government, they have also embarked on various programs that are geared towards making the lives of the children better.

“One of the best ideas we have implemented was the issuance of new three year contracts to over 700 ECDE teachers across the County and also doubling their salaries from Kshs. 10,000 to 23, 000 under a new scheme of service,” Nyong’o adds.

He says this was coupled with the distribution of 20 million shillings worth of text books and exercise books to all the 668 ECDE Centres across the County.

“We also provided meals to our ECDE schools costing about 14 million shillings not forgetting the infrastructural development of ECDE Centres across the Sub Counties that are at different stages,” Nyong’o further say.
The Governor on the other hand has said the County Government’s Scholarship program for education continues to grow.
“In this FY 2019/2020, we went ahead to double the budgetary allocations across the county amounting to Kshs. 350,000  per ward totaling to about 12.2 million. This will help support 350 needy across the County,”
He adds that the County Government has also doubled Bursary allocation from shs. 2 million to shs 4 million per ward in the FY 2019/2020 totaling to shs. 140 Million.
