Lawyer Amondi pulls out of County Assembly of Kisumu Speaker’s race

THE much awaited election for the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu is now a one man race after one contestant has pulled out of the race.

Kenneth Oduor Amondi who until this evening was a candidate for the position of the Speaker has announced that he has pulled out of the race for the sake of unity at the County Assembly of Kisumu.

Addressing the press today evening, Amondi said before he decided to contest the seat of the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu, he consulted widely with various stakeholders in Kisumu county.

He says being a staunch supporter of ODM Party, he can’t go against its decision to back Elisha Jack Oraro who has been an Acting Speaker for a period of three months and now vying for the position of the substantive speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu.

“The ODM party leadership within Kisumu County has made a decision today and said according to them they are fully supporting Elisha Jack Oraro and as an ODM party faithful, I can’t go against such a decision at all,” he says.

He adds that if he would have gone through up to the Election Day, he would have won the seat with a landslide because he had a good number of Members of the County Assembly who have been backing him for the seat.

“After a very careful and wide consultation, I have decided that the best thing to do is to withdraw my candidature for the Speakers seat at the County Assembly of Kisumu,” Amondi adds.

Amondi says he has never been coerced or intimidated to withdraw his candidature but has done it so as to allow unity to prevail at the County Assembly of Kisumu.

Amondi’s move comes barely a few days after he presented his nomination papers to the Clerk of the County Assembly of Kisumu on Tuesday this week as one of the Candidates for the position of the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu.

Amondi says there is a time when the interest of the Kisumu County is bigger than any individual including him.

Amondi’s withdrawal from the race now leaves Hon. Elisha Jack Oraro as the only candidate for the Speakers seat in an election that will be conducted tomorrow at the County Assembly of Kisumu building beginning 9:00 am.
