Gazette the technical team on BBI, Kisumu Leaders say.

LEADERS in Kisumu County have called for gazettement of the technical team on the Building Bridges Initiative in order to take up any suggestions at the regional and other consultation levels that are planned.

The leaders led by Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o say time is of the essence for the referendum process hence the need to gazette the technical team.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today ahead of the mega meeting in Kisii on January 10,2020, Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o who read a joint press statement on behalf of other leaders in Kisumu County said they will focus their energy towards ensuring that people at the grass root are fully mobilized to actively participate in the various consultations on the BBI.

“We fully support the BBI and the meeting that will be held this January 10 and other subsequent meetings be used to push the momentum for the BBI agenda countrywide and accept that amendments can be made as the technical team will determine arising from the stakeholders’ engagements,” they said in a press statement.

The leaders have agreed that  they support the Referendum as the only means of effecting the various recommendations touching on the constitution particularly the governance that addresses the “winner take it all” phenomenon which is responsible for the ills afflicting the country and inhibiting its development potential.

Nyong’o says the reason as to why they are meeting in Kisii County tomorrow is because the BBI report was put to the nation for discussions, adding that such discussions could raise issues which can further be discussed.

Seme Member of Parliament Dr. James Nyikal says the BBI contains the issues of Governance structures, adding that there is need for a National Referendum to address such issues.

Nyikal who is also the Chair of the Parliamentary Caucus for MPs from Kisumu County that the Referendum is the only way to go as it will touch on the constitutional areas that leads to structure of leadership that can deliver all the other issues that needs referendum.

“As this is happening, there is need to have a technical committee should be in place as we are going to have this regional consultation,” Dr. Nyikal says.

On his part, Kisumu West Member of Parliament John Olago Aluoch says the meeting has been convened on a multi and bipartisan approach where more than one political parties come out in support of the BBI.

Olago says the sooner the Country have a referendum on the issue of amending the constitution the better.

He adds that the National Referendum should be held before the end of this year, adding that it should not be held too close with the next General elections.

“The sooner we have the Referendum, the better because if we have it too close to the election it is bound to divide the country,” Olago says.

Nominated Senator Rose Nyamunga says BBI has the opportunity to help fix some of the problems the country is facing.

Kisumu County Assembly Acting Speaker Elisha Jack Oraro says they are fully in support of the BBI, adding that they will be going to the grass root level to enlighten the public on the document.
