Association donates Covid-19 kits as campaign to flatten the curve launch in Kisumu

AN association has donated items meant to help in curbing the spread of the Corona Virus disease as sensitization campaigns to help flattening the curve has been launched in the seven sub-counties in Kisumu.

The Lake Region Traders Association has donated items such as face masks, hand washing soaps, gloves and sanitizers to residents of the seven sub-counties to help in curbing the spread of the Covid-19 disease in Kisumu County that has been declared as one of the 13 Counties within the Lake Region Economic Bloc{LREB} as a hotspot.

The Association’s Chairman Jayesh Patel says more such donations are expected and will be distributed again.

He says the residents in the 13 counties of the Lake region Economic Bloc should now strictly adhere to Covid-19 protocols as spelt out in the ministry of health guidelines to avoid further spread of the disease.

Patel who is also the chairman of the Kenya Manufacturers Association in Western Kenya has suggested that schools within the Lake region should be closed for two weeks so as to help in flattening the curve.

“We suggest that schools be closed for the next two week to help in flattening the curve. This is because children get together in schools and mingle freely hence this can be a super spreader. They can they come back home and infect their parents and other relatives,” he says

Kisumu County Commissioner Josephine Ouko who flagged off the campaign to sensitize the public on Corona Virus with an aim of flattening the curve through strictly following the laid down guidelines from the Ministry of Health said resources should be available that include Personal Protective Equipment{PPEs}, Gloves, Vehicles used for sensitization exercise among others.

Ouko says there are various strategies like support to the medical staff in the health facilities, adding that they need social-circle support.

She says the other strategy is capacity building more so of the Community health workers which has been ongoing as well as telling the public about the post Covid-19.

“We are also having a strategy of enforcing the law and we need the support of all the stakeholders including those in the transport sector,” Ouko says.

The Kisumu County Commissioner says the sensitization program is sub-county based in the seven sub-county since the need per sub-county have been identified.

“We have realized that it take me and you in whatever the cadre you are in to flatten this curve. We have developed a strategy as a multi-agency to flatten this curve through a six point where we are reminding the public about the Covid-19 which we know they know it is existing,” Ouko adds.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili says the effects of the pandemic depends on how the protocols laid down are followed.

He urges the residents of the 13 Counties of the Lake region economic bloc to help in breaking the circuit of spread of Corona virus.

“Let us follow the protocols as laid down by the Ministry of Health without breaking the rules at all times,” Dr. Owili says.
