Kisumu MCAs says Sondu Market is in the County, not Kericho

A SECTION of Members of the County Assembly of Kisumu have said that the Sondu Market is within Kisumu County borders and not Kericho as claimed by  Kericho County Senator.

The MCAs say the available evidence shows that Sondu Market has from Independence been on the Kisumu side of the border.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today to register their concerns over the recent remarks by Kericho Senator Haroun Cheruyiot that Sondu Market belongs to Kericho County, the MCAs led by South East Nyakach Ward Representative Johnson Guya termed the senator’s remarks as being in bad taste, populist and could easily spark mistrust and unnecessary tension between the communities trading at Sondu Market.

They say the Traders from the communities staying around the border have for over many years been co-existing peacefully while doing their trading activities at the said market without any friction or disputes over the collection of revenue, adding that this has been so because the boundaries are well known.

“The Department of Lands have very clear records and maps showing the boundaries of Sondu Market and this will guide us in resolving this matter,” they said in a signed press statement.

They have called for sobriety and a lot of calm about the matter, adding that leaders from both sides must desist from utterances that may disrupt the peaceful co-existence of all the communities trading at the market.

“We appeal to our brothers and sisters from our neighbouring Kericho County not to listen to leaders trying to incite them against paying revenue to Kisumu County and they should continue to do this as they have been doing for the past many years,” they add.
