Kisumu County
launches shs 45M Bursary for needy students
The County Government of Kisumu has today launched sh 45
Million bursary for needy students across the 35 wards within the county.
Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Ochieng Owili says the
bursary will benefit a total of 9,772 needy High school students from across
our 7 Sub-Counties.
Addressing the press during the flag off of the bursary
program today in Kisumu, Dr. Owli said the disbursement brings to Ksh 160,722, 826, the
amount of money the County Government of Kisumu has given out as bursaries and
scholarships to students in schools, Universities, tertiary colleges and
Driving schools in the past two years.
“As you can recall, in
January this year, we gave out Ksh 57,230,025 as scholarships to 1,260
beneficiaries in Universities and Driving schools,” Dr. Owili says.
Owili says the bursaries and scholarships, have changed the
lives of many needy students who have been disparately seeking assistance to
enable them pursue dream careers.
“But we are not stopping here, because our children must go
to schools and become the cornerstone of this great County. As our governor has
always said, every student in this county must be helped to cherish and realise
his or her dream,” he says.
The Deputy Governor has assured the residents of Kisumu that
the selection of beneficiaries to the bursary and Scholarship kitty has been
above board.
He says the applicants are diligently scrutinized by the
Non-Partisan Ward Bursary Committees, who in turn send the evaluation forms to
the County’s department of Education, adding that they have also put in place
committees to note any complains and grievances.
He says the exercise has kicked off by sending Ksh 12,492,00
to Nyakach Sub County, adding that the rest of the Sub Counties will follow
suit.
“I wish to appeal to
students who will be getting the bursaries to study hard, pass their
examinations and fulfil their career dreams. This, I hope, is the best way to
pay back the tax payers,” Dr. Owili further adds.
Owili at the same time has hinted that the County Government
of Kisumu has resolved that it will be paying school fees to two students from
each of the 35 wards who wish to pursue Marine Training at the newly
established Marine school in Kisumu.
“We are doing this because we are right now having a new
Marine School in Kisumu and our people must benefit from it. We urge parents
whose children wish to become Coxswains and other Marine related jobs to apply
for the scholarships beginning next financial year,” he further says.
There has been a serious delay about the disbursement of both the bursary and scholarship to needy students from the 35 wards in Kisumu County, a move that forced the county assembly of Kisumu to summon the CEC in charge of Education John Awiti and his Finance Counterpart George Okong'o to shade more light on the issue why there was such a delay.
