loses in sudden death of their fish are set to benefit from County Government
of Kisumu’s donation of shs 3Million to help them buy fingerlings and fish
feeds.
Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o has hinted that
the County Government of Kisumu is set to use shs 3 million to cushion cage
fish farmers who experienced heavy loss of their commodities after death
witnessed recently on fish cages in various beaches along Lake Victoria shores
within Kisumu County.
Addressing the press today, Kisumu
Governor said Fishermen and specifically cage fish farmers operating along
Othany beach in Seme Sub County have borne the brunt of the phenomenon by
incurring massive economic loss.
The Governor says at Othany beach
alone, the investors reported losses estimated at sh 40M, adding that there
have also been reports fish dying around the Pier, Usoma, Genge, Dunga among
other beaches.
“As a county government, we have been
following this tragedy with a lot of concern and interest because it affects
the livelihoods of our people. Our
officers from the departments of Fisheries and Environment have been engaging
other experts on this matter,” Governor Nyong’o says.
Nyong’o
says with the shs 3 million, they will procure fingerlings worth sh 2million and fish feed at a cost of sh
1million to be distributed to the
affected fish farmers in the mentioned
beaches to help them restock and recover the loses.
“My government is greatly concerned by the massive losses incurred by the
cage fish farmers. This is because they
offer employment to many people and help supplement fish supplies in the market,” Nyong’o says.
The
Governor adds that there are plans to kick off a multi-stake holders approach
to address pollution of the lake and the environment. We want to engage
stakeholders on how to save Lake Victoria, adding that this initiative will be
championed by the county department of Water and Environment.
“We plan
to kick off a campaign Proper assessment of the capacity of the lake in regard
to siting (location) of cage installation and compliance with set guidelines on
proper siting of cages,”
He says
there will be continued vigilance in management and treatment of waster waters,
dealing decisively with pollutants and effluents in consideration to fish and
human health as well as considering restocking the lake with indigenous species
through a targeted breeding program.
Nyong’o
says there are also plans to minimize increased upstream nutrient enrichment
through adoption of Good agricultural practices and afforestation to buffer
siltation and erosion.
Some of the beaches in Kisumu County
whose fish cage farmers are set to benefit from the kitty include Othany, Usoma,
Genge, Dunga and Kisumu Pier among other beaches.
