Organization set to drill borehole, build toilets to two schools in Nyando

TWO Primary schools and community in Nyando Constituency are set to benefit from an organization’s intention of drilling a borehole and constructing modern toilets for them to help improving the issue of Health and sanitation.

The two schools namely Disi and Nyomwaro Primary schools in Kochogo South Sub-location are set to benefit from an organization known as Habitat for Humanity Kenya which has identified the two schools for the said projects.

Addressing the teachers and pupils of the two institutions at Disi Primary during this year’s World Toilet Day, Habitat for Humanity Kenya Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Willy Lang’at says the two schools have been identified since the area has been facing a lot of challenges on health and sanitation during the drought and during heavy rains that cause floods within.

Lang’at says the project will be implemented for a period of three years, adding that it falls under the water sanitation and hygiene {WASH} Project.

He says the borehole to be drilled will benefit the entire community by providing them with sufficient water for drinking and for other domestic use.

Lang’at says within the two schools they will provide them with 10,000 litters’ tank to help in storing water for the use by pupils, teachers and support staff, adding that they will put up modern toilets for the two schools.

He says the organization has also embarked on sensitizing school going children on the importance of sanitation where it has been educating them on hand washing procedures as well what reasons makes them to wash their hands.

He adds that proper hygiene among the school going children will help minimize water borne diseases like bilharzia, Diarrhea, dysentery and other diseases like Cholera, Typhoid and amoeba.

He says the organization’s aim is to build the community’s resilience so that they will be able to fight challenges brought about by the extreme drought and floods.

A Public Health officer in Nyando Judy Lucy says the area was declared open deafaecation free {ODF} in 2015.

She says one of the Sustainable Development Goals for Kenya is to make it ODF by the year 2030, adding that by that time every home stead will have a pit latrine or modern toilets.

She says in terms of latrine and toilet coverage with Nyando area, they are at a good percentage.

She adds that plans are underway to construct modern toilets within the area using a new technology to prevent them from sinking since of the land there are waterlogged.

Lucy has further appealed to the public to observe clean environment, adding that it will greatly help in minimizing diseases associated with lack of hygiene and proper sanitation.

“Let us make use of the already available sanitary facilities and not expose ourselves badly on issues of health and sanitation,” Lucy says.

She furthers says that the issue of Community Led Total Sanitation {CLTS} in Nyando has shown tremendous progress where Community Health Volunteers have done a great work in sensitizing the community on the importance of health and sanitation.

Members of the community who attended this year’s World Toilet Day event with a theme “ ,Making the Invisible Visible has appreciated the efforts being made so far to improve on health and sanitation in the area.
