Counties in Nyanza told to set aside funds for Disaster preparedness

The Counties in Nyanza region have been urged to consider setting aside funds for disaster preparedness and get early preparations.

The Four Counties that include Kisumu, Migori, Siaya and Homa Bay have been told not to wait until disasters strike then start looking for funds.

Former President of the East African Law Society James Mwamu says the Four Counties in Luo Nyanza region seems to be unprepared for the anticipated El Nino rains despite warning from the Meteorological department that El nino rains will be witnessed.

Mwamu says the level of unpreparedness by the four counties is very worrying indeed, adding that they are waiting for wanton destruction by the El Nino so that they react thereafter.

“The level of unpreparedness by the four Counties in Luo Nyanza can shock you and we don’t know whether they are waiting for people’s property to be destroyed as a result of the El Nino rains,” Mwamu says.

Mwamu says there has been enough and sufficient time to prepare for such disaster, adding that there is no need to rush to the scenes of floods with items like blanket to go and give the victims affected during such cases.

Mwamu has questioned what level of preparedness is there by the four mentioned counties like de-siltation of rivers in Nyanza region, establishing evacuation centers among others.

“We are telling the four Governors in Nyanza region to get prepared for the up coming rains and never to wait until a disaster comes,” Mwamu adds.

Mwamu has urged the County Assemblies within Nyanza region to generate bills supporting disaster preparedness.
