KenGen sets to re-develop Gogo Hydro Power Project in Migori

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC is set to re-develop the Gogo Hydro Power Project in Migori so as to increase the Electricity supply in the National Grid.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Engineer Peter Njenga says the Cabinet's Recent approval of the Gogo Hydro Power Project’s redevelopment is a pivotal moment for the company and the country as a whole.

Addressing the press today after the Stakeholders' tour of the Sondu/Miriu Hydro Power Station in Kisumu County, the KenGen Managing Director said this will be in the spirit of continuous improvement and environmental responsibility.

He says the Gogo Dam Electricity generation capacity will increase from 2Megawatts to a robust 8.6 Megawatts to the national grid.

“This endevour is a seamless alignment with Kenya’s commitment to clean energy and significantly contributes to our national objectives outlined in the global climate action agenda,” Engineer Njenga says.

He says the Gogo Hydro power project symbolizes tremendous progress in the energy sector, promising economic growth, job creation and improved livelihoods.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company’s Board of Directors Chairman Julius Ogamba says the Gogo Hydro Power Project redevelopment will really elevate the Migori-Based plant’s electricity generation.

He adds that the existing power plant with its origins dating back to 1958 has admirably served its purpose, adding that however, with its aging infrastructure, it faces frequent breakdowns and challenges in sourcing spare parts.

“The Redevelopment will rejuvenate the reliability of the power supply, stimulate socio-economic activities and contribute to the prosperity of Nyanza and Western Kenya regions

“We promise to play our role and help Kenya Kwanza Government under President Dr William Ruto to achieve its goals in the energy sector including arching affordable universal access and transitioning to 100 percent green energy,” the KenGen Board Chairman says.
