Govt told to address the issue of Sondu skirmishes by identifying culprits

THE Government has been urged to immediately address the issue of conflict along the Kisumu-Kericho Border at the Sondu Market by identifying the culprits who should be punished by law.

Former President of the East African Law Society James Mwamu says what is happening along the Kisumu-Kericho Border at Sondu Market is very unfortunate indeed and must stop forthwith.

Addressing the Press at his Kisumu Office today, Mwamu has urged the Government to find a lasting solution towards the skirmishes that has left nearly seven people dead and several others injured.

Mwamu has strongly condemned the skirmishes, adding that it is a strange phenomenon.

He says the Government should work extra hard to identify, arrest  and take to Court those perpetrators who are fueling the conflict between the two communities who have been staying there.

The Former East African Law Society President says the issue of the boundaries between the two communities staying along the Border of Kisumu and Kericho at Sondu Market is known and there is no need for it to be re-drawn.

“Since from our childhood days, it is known where the boundaries along Kisumu-Kericho border at Sondu Market is known,” Mwamu says.

Mwamu wonders why after 60 years of Independence, there are still some people who participate in eliminating fellow country men and women through skirmishes.

Mwamu urges the Government to identify the real problem causing the skirmishes within the said border and deal with it once and for all.

“The root cause of the skirmishes along the borders of Kisumu-Kericho should be fully identifies and dealt with once and for all other than having both the elders from the two communities engage in just mere talks without an amicable solution, “ Mwamu adds.

Mwamu has challenged a section of Members of Parliament who have declared their interest to work with the current Government so as to bring development to the people to help in addressing the issue along the said border.

“The local leaders must come out and tell the President that what is happening in Sondu is wrong and must stop,” he adds.

Mwamu’s sentiments comes during today’s President Dr William Ruto’s visit in Kisumu to launch the Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Fisheries Institute in Nyando Constituency.

President Ruto while reacting to the Crowds demand to address the issue of ethnic clashes along Kisumu-Kericho border at Sondu Market has ordered his Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki to ensure that those attacking and killing people along the said border are arrested and taken to court.

President Ruto says there is no need for tribalism and people should co-exist peacefully.

He adds that Government will deal with the perpetrators along the Kisumu-Kericho Border at Sondu Market ruthlessly.

“I have instructed Prof Kithure Kindiki to ensure that those who caused people to loose their lives during the recent skirmishes at Sondu Market must be arrested and taken to court then jailed for such a crime,” President Ruto says.
