Over 800 km National Cancer Awareness Walk kicks off from Kisumu to Kilifi.

A Community Based Organization from Kilifi County has embarked on 31 days walk to create a national awareness on cancer disease.

The CBO known as Mulika Saratani has embarked on the National Cancer Awareness Walk from Kisumu to Kilifi which will cover over 800 kilometers.

The walk commences today from Kisumu City and will end in Kilifi County on October 31 this year.

It has a theme of Educate, Prevent and Get early diagnosis of the disease.

Addressing the press in Kisumu during the official Kick off of the event, Kisumu County First Lady Dorothy Nyong’o said this is a very noble initiative to create awareness on Cancer disease across the country.

Mrs.Nyong’o says awareness on cancer as a disease is very important and the public should be aware.
She says early detection of the disease at its early stages is very important for earlier treatment of the disease.

“Awareness on the cancer disease is very important and the public should be made aware of this disease with an aim of helping fighting cancer,” Mrs. Nyong’o says.

Nyong’o who also represents Africa Cancer Foundation {ACF} says through the foundation, they are helping to create awareness on cancer disease.

Kisumu County Executive Committee Member in charge of Health and Sanitation Dr. Rosemary Obara says the County will partner together with Kilifi County and other partners like Africa Cancer Foundation on issues of cancer awareness creation.

Obara says Cancer is the third largest cause of mortality and should be taken seriously where awareness is made to the public about this disease.

“We know that cancer is a very dangerous disease and we must play a role in fighting this scourge hence the need for us to partner and do this together,” Dr. Obara says.

She urges members of the public to go for screening against the disease, adding that early detection will help in proper treatment of the disease before going to stage four which is advanced stage.

She adds that early detection helps in saving lives of those suffering from Cancer after being treated upon detected earlier enough.

Dr. Obara further urges the public to eat healthy diet and have healthy life styles, adding that physical activities like walking is also very important.  

Mulika Saratani CBO is associated with a Madam Florence from Kilifi County who lost her mother as a result of cancer disease.

She registered the CBO so as to help in the creation of awareness about the Cancer disease after it had claimed the life of her mother.

The CBO has done several walks within the Coastal region within one and half years so as to help creating awareness about cancer disease.

Rotary Club of Kisumu has come out in support of the CBO for this particular National Cancer Awareness Walk.

During the 31 days walk, the group will also visit patients suffering from cancer in health facilities so as to see the challenges they still face. 

The month of October is normally marked as Cancer awareness month.
