Medical appeal to flood victims in Kisumu as Kibos Sugar donates blankets and bails of sugar

Medical appeal to flood victims in Kisumu as Kibos Sugar donates blankets and bails of sugar

VARIOUS victims of the raging floods in Kisumu county needs urgent medical attention, the Community coordinated response team to assist the flood victims has said.

The Team says as a result of the raging floods witnessed due to heavy rains which have been pounding the area, a number of flood victims risk contacting malaria and other water bone diseases hence need urgent medical attention.

Addressing the press at Jomo Kenyatta Sports ground today when receiving donations from Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries Limited, a member of the Team Dr. Joshua Oron said over 20,000 people have been greatly affected by the flood in various parts of Kisumu County.

Dr. Oron says about 4,000 households are being hosted in various rescue centers that the County Government of Kisumu have established in various parts of the county.

He says currently, the team has started running medical camps in the rescue centers where the flood victims have been camping since they were relocated, adding St. Aloys in Gem Rae, Kanyalwal and two other places in Nyakach.

He adds that today, the team is moving to Nyamasao and Ombaka Primary schools in Ahero Ward then to Nyamrundu in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Ward for a medical Camp to the flood victims.

Dr. Oron says already Victoria Chemist in Kisumu have donated drugs worth about shs 300,000 to assist the flood victims, adding that he appeals to other providers in the healthcare to continue supporting such an initiative.

“We are really appealing to various chemists and other medical institutions, private hospitals to assist us with medical staff and drugs so as to help the flood victims in Kisumu County,” Dr. Oron says.
Oron says the impact of floods as cases of malaria, water borne diseases and wounds as a result of staying in water by some flood victims.

Addressing the press when presenting the donations from Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries Limited, the Company’s Corporate Affairs Manager Joyce Opondo says the have donated 1,130 blankets and 600 kilograms of sugar to the team so as to assist the floods victims.

Opondo says the company has been really touched by the plight of the various victims of the flood hence has necessitated the assistance from the company.

Opondo has thanked the County Government of Kisumu and the private Sector for coming up with the initiative to collect donations for the flood victims in various parts of Kisumu County.

Opondo says the items worth estimated shs 0.5million.

Yogi Dawda, a member of the team says the response towards donations to the flood victims has been a good one.

He appeals for more donations from well-wishers so as to assist the victims, adding that more items are still needed.

He says since the launch of the initiative last week, a good chunk of donation have been witnessed, adding items collected so far is estimated to be worth shs 1.5 million.

The Community coordinated response team to assist the flood victims in Kisumu County was launched last week at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground after the members of Community living in Kisumu County and County Government of Kisumu partnered to make appeal for donations of items and cash.

The Response towards the initiative has been overwhelming as residents of the county are trooping into the venue to donate food and other items to the victims of the floods.
