Kenya Coast Guard Service destroys illegal fishing gears worth shs 4M in Kisumu

The Kenya Coast Guard Service has destroyed illegal fishing gears worth about shs 4 million in Kisumu City.

Kenya Coast Guard Service Director General Brigadier Retired Loonena Naisho says more than 100 offenders will be prosecuted over the matter of using illegal fishing gears.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today during the exercise to destroy the illegal fishing gears, KCGS Director General said 45 illegal fishing nets were seized during the swoop.

He says some of the nets seized include Monofilament nets, undersized gillnets, mosquito seine nets and beach seine popurlaly known as Amuok in local language.

The Director General says the nets were seized in Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay waters.

“The fisheries Management Development Act which we enforce allows for forfeiture of the gears and boats and our personnel will continue with the patrols to enforce the law and ensure that prohibited fishing gears and methods are not exacerbated,” the Director General says.

He has recommended the Beach Management Unit Network within the region for their efforts to collaborate with the KCGS personnel to eradicate illegal fishing, adding that the Kisumu Court officials have been present to witness that court orders are implemented to the full.

“I fully welcome BMU network and units to continue collaborating with our stations in sensitizing fisher folks in changing and adapting sustainable mode of fishing for our generation and generations to come,” he adds.

He calls for full cooperation among various stakeholders to ensure that sustainable fisheries is undertaken in Lake Victoria.

The Operation dubbed Ondoa Uvuvi Mbaya has made the illegal fishing gears netted and detained through enforcement patrols within the Lake Victoria.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 2018 as a multi-agency security service to enforce law and order in Kenya’s Territorial and Internal waters.

The Joint focus is designed to strengthen inter-agency coordination and enhanced domain awareness to detect, deter, prevent and interdict individuals and organizations engaged in illegal activities within its areas of jurisdiction with a vision of to be a premier service in maritime security, safety and protection and its mission is to enforce Maritime security, safety and protection of maritime resources within Kenya territorial waters.
