Nyanza has only four major known Police Road blocks, says RC

NYANZA region has only four known police road blocks, the area Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika has said.

The Regional Commissioner says the four road blocks include the one in Migori County in the border of Kenya and Tanzania which controls the movement of people from Tanzania into Kenya.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today during the launch of fumigation exercise for Police stations in Nyanza region so as to help curb the spread of Corona virus, Mutindika said other major Police Road blocks in Nyanza include the one along the borders of Western and Nyanza region near Kakamega as well as the one in Busia and Kericho that borders Kisumu County.

He says all these road blocks are meant to control the movement of the people due to covid-19 pandemic.

However, the Nyanza Regional Commissioner says there are instant traffic police road blocks mounted within the counties because matatus normally traffic rule and regulations.

He says the regional team has impressed upon the County teams to ensure that when matatus leave the main bus terminus, they carry only eight passengers but on the way they flout the traffic rules by carrying excess passenger like 18 hence has necessitated the mounting of the instant traffic police road blocks.

The Nyanza Regional Commissioner urges the members of the public not to board public service vehicles in excess, adding that by doing this they will be violating traffic rules and regulations.

The Regional Commissioner’s sentiment comes barely a few day after a section of Kisumu City Residents raised alarm over increased Police Road blocks which they claim are too many in a number of roads in Nyanza region especially Kisumu county.

Audi Ogada, the Human Rights and Social Justice Defender wrote a letter this September 3, 2020 to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai over the re-emergency of bloated road blocks and what he termed as high level corruption and impunity in Nyanza region.

Ogada in his letter claims that there are about 70 road blocks in various areas of Nyanza region.

He claims that in all these roadblocks, it is open secret that all PSV vehicles pay illegal but mandatory fees of sh 100 one way.

On a return trip the same vehicles also part with ksh 100/=,  basing our information that one hundred and fifty vehicles that play Busia route per day (for example) pay a substantial sum of Ksh 300,000 of the nine routes mentioned above, it is undeniable that Ksh 2-4 is collected daily and illegally,” Ogada says in his letter.

The Nyanza Regional Commissioner has challenged any member of the public with information regarding the illegal road blocks to provide to him.
