Kisumo Elders urges for continued peaceful existence of communities within Maseno town

ELDERS from Kisumo Community have fully supported the County Government of Kisumu’s move to elevate Maseno trading center to a town status and have told inciters to leave the communities staying there to continue existing peacefully as they have been.

The elders under the Banner of Kisumo Community have lauded the recent move by Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o to upgrade Maseno to town, adding that this has been a very good gesture.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today, the elders led by Kisumo Community Secretary Jotham Ajiki Ondu said those who have embarked on inciting the two communities residing within the area over the boundary dispute should never do such like a thing since the communities have been co-existing peacefully since time immemorial.

“When all is said and done, one wonders how a people can stay peacefully with their neighbours for over a century, only for inciters to suddenly wake up and sow seeds of discord,” they say.

The elders claim that in the year 2016, there was a meeting regarding the boundary dispute when a Mr. Kirui, the then Government Surveyor produced a Map Number 1 of 1922 which defined the boundaries of Maseno township, adding that there is a beacon on the equator and another one at the post office.

“Using a GPS, placed on post office beacon, the defined boundary covers a full 4,500 feet to the West up to Sunrise and when placed on the equator, it stretches 4,500 feet to the south up to Kenya Forestry Research Institute {Kefri}. These are fixed and permanent boundaries that cannot be changed even by petitioning in Parliament,” they add

There has been a boundary dispute among the two leading communities living within Maseno area while a community within Vihiga County claim the ownership of Maseno area while another one in Kisumu County have been claiming its ownership saying it is in Nyanza region.
