JSC told Recruit a competent Chief Justice to replace Maraga

The Judicial Service Commission has been told to hire a competent person so as to replace the retired Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga.

Former President of the East Africa Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu says the Commission should recruit a person who is independent minded and can make bold decisions as the President of the Supreme Court of Kenya and Head of the Judiciary in the country.

Mwamu says the next Chief Justice should be very bold enough to protect the Independence of Judiciary just as the immediate former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga did during his tenure in office.

He says Maraga did a good job and some of his rulings have remained a landmark in the World as a whole.

Mwamu says the next CJ should be able to carry out Judiciary Transformations Programs within the Judiciary which the Former Chief Justice has been spearheading.

He says the immediate former Chief Justice did a wonderful work that included being bold and nullifying a Presidential Election results on September 1, 2017 and the other one of advising the President to dissolve Parliament for its failure to enact the two thirds Gender rule last year among other land mark rulings and judgments.

“Judicial Service Commission should embark on recruiting a very competent person to replace Maraga as the Chief Justice and such a person must be an independent minded one,” he says

He has urged the Lawyers across the country who are qualified to apply for the Positions of the CJ, adding that such position are not just given but must be applied for and recruitment done on suitability, merit and competence.

The Judicial Service Commission has advertised for the position of Chief Justice while seeking to replace the retired Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga who retired this month after attaining the age of 70 years.

Maraga was appointed the Country’s Chief Justice in 2016 to replace the then retired Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga who was appointed the Chief Justice to serve under the new Constitution of Kenya 2010 that was promulgated on August 27, 2010.
