Kisumu Traders to hold peaceful demo to protest demolition of businesses

A section of Traders in Kisumu have planned to hold a peaceful demonstration so as to register their displeasure with the ongoing demolition of businesses belonging to the Small Media Enterprises by the County Government of Kisumu.

The traders claim that the current demolition being carried out is very much unlawful hence want it stopped immediately since there are no proper plans to relocate even those whose premises have been demolished.

Under the banner of the Kisumu Residents and Small Medium Enterprises Community, the traders in a letter dated January 11,2021 addressed to the Kisumu Central Sub-County Officer Commanding Police Division, have notified the Kenya National Police Service of their intention to hold a peaceful demonstration on January 15,2021 within Kisumu Central to express their dissatisfaction and grievances in the in-human manner in which the county Government of Kisumu through the management of Kisumu City is currently undertaking the City re-organization.

They requested the police to provide them with adequate security during the said period while they have promised to ensure that all the Ministry of Health guidelines on Covid-19 are strictly adhered to.

“The protestors will emanate from the following Assembling points namely Kondele , Obunga, Manyatta, Jua Kali and Nyalenda before converging at Taifa Park for address thereafter march to Prosperity House to present our petition to the Governor, County Commissioner and the Regional Commissioner,” Part of the letter reads.

However, a section of Traders have strongly condemned the planned peaceful demonstration terming it as a waste of time.

Led by Philip Nyagu, the traders within Market/Mlimani ward say they have already suffered hence need not to take part any kind of peaceful demonstration.

They claim that they have been in constant dialogue with the County Government of Kisumu to have an amicable solution to see how they can be handled after demolition of stalls.
