Schools in Nyando affected by floods receive Covid 19 kits from County Govt
A NUMBER of schools in Nyando constituency within Kisumu County which have been affected by backflow of water and floods have received Covid-19 kits from the County Government of Kisumu.
Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o says the Covid 19 kits are from the department of Education and Special program department from the County Government of Kisumu.
Addressing the press during the flagging off of the items, Nyong’o says the construction of the Multi-purpose Koru-Soin Dam by the National Government will be of great help in controlling the perennial floods that has been affecting parts of Kisumu County that includes Nyando Constituency among other areas.
Nyong’o says the schools which have benefitted from the donation of the Covid 19 kits include Nyamrundu, Oseth, Kandaria, Ogenya, Ugwe,Odienya and Ombaka.
Nyong’o says there is need to ensure that these schools are taken to higher grounds, adding that the decision by the national government to rebuild some of the schools there is a good one.
He adds his Government will team up with the national government to have a joint endeavors since these schools are also having Early Childhood Development Centers which are a devolve function of the County Governments.
Some of the items that have been donated include Hand washing tanks, sanitizers, buckets and hand washing soaps among others.
Most schools in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal ward in Nyando constituency within Kisumu County have suffered a great deal after water backflow from the Lake Victoria invaded them following heavy rains witnessed from April and most parts of last year where a number of homes and schools were submerged in water.
Floods from River Nyando also affected some schools and homesteads within the area the river burst his banks.
When schools re-opened this January 4 for term two after a ten months holiday after being closed due to corona virus pandemic in March last year, some schools have been hosted by their neigbours because the schools are not accessible.
When Cabinet Secretary in charge of Education Prof George Magoha visited the schools last week he hinted that the Government plans to reconstruct the schools at a cost of shs 10 million each.
