NCIC has developed Roadmap to peaceful 2022 General elections

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has developed a roadmap to peaceful 2022 General Election with an overall objective of setting the Agenda and need for direction for all peace actors to make adequate preparations for a peaceful electoral process.

According to NCIC, a consultative process revealed six main factors that contribute to violence in Elections in the Country and they include Lack of Trust where the 2013 Social Cohesion Index established that the level of trust between Kenya Communities are very low and in addition, the trust between the state and the society is also questionable.

The other one is sub-culture of Violence which is said to have become a common means of expressing opposition and dissent on most issues in the country.

Others include divisive and selfish politics, ethnic polarization, untimely and inadequate response to conflict and structural inequalities.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has now adopted five transformative strategies to unlock to the already identified roadblocks.

They include building trust among the communities by opening communication channels within and between communities as well as building trust between citizens and state and enhancing generalized trust within the society.

The other one is lead responsibility where political leaders will be sensitized and facilitating politicians debates on patriotic leadership as well as initiating a peace ambassadors program for politicians.

Others include resisting violence by harmonizing content and delivery of sensitization as well as enhancing citizens’ consciousness and practice of non-violence.

The commission has also come up with a strategy on eliminating hate speech and disruption of violence.

“This roadmap for peaceful elections is born out of an urgent call to action to all peace stakeholders to synergize towards this reality. Indeed, a peaceful election can only be achieved through a synergetic front of all peace builders in the country,” says part of the document known as a violence free 2022 which NCIC has developed.
