Clergy urges for constant prayers ahead of polls in August

Clergy urges for constant prayers ahead of polls in August

A MEMBER of the clergy has called upon all the religions across the country to constantly and genuinely pray for this nation as it approaches another General Elections in August this year.

Deputy Head of the Legion Maria of African Church Mission Cardinal Dean Daniel Christopher Okoth Otang says all religions across the country should engage in prayers for the nation to have a peace poll and transition in this electioneering period.

Addressing the congregation at Saint Mary’s Nyalenda Legion Maria of African Church Mission in Kisumu during the Sunday Mass, Otang said the country needs to remain united and this will only be possible if there is constant prayers asking God to provide peace and tranquility before, during and after the polls.

Otang says as the Legion Maria of African Church Mission, they will always remain neutral before, during and after the polls and will only preach peaceful messages to all citizens of this great nation at this time of electioneering period.

“We appeal to all the members of the clergy from all the religions in our country to engage in constant prayers before, during and after the General election slated in August this year. The country needs to remain united and this will only be so if we prayer genuinely for this our beloved nation,” Cardinal Dean Otang says.

Otang has urged politicians across various political divide to be very careful with their utterances during the public rally and should not incite the citizens against one another during this period.

He says utterances that borders hate speech and incitement to violence should be shunned at all cost, adding that all politicians should engage in peaceful campaigns when such a time come after the electoral body will declare the campaign period.

“We further appeal to politicians across the country not to engage in utterance that can incite the public to violence. They should not also propagate for war as we head to the polls in August this year,” he adds.

He also underscore the need to shun negative ethnicity and any form of discrimination among the citizens of the nation.

The Church’s Cardinal Dean has also appealed to all the citizens across the nation especially the youth not to be misused by some politicians to cause violence before, during and after the polls, adding that any act of lawlessness should be shunned at all cost.

He has further urged all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 and above to have the Identity cards and register as voters during the second mass voter registration exercise that kicks off from today till February 6 this year in readiness for the polls in August.
