Kisumu Governor sends workers home for voter mobilization
exercise
Kisumu Governor
Prof Peter Anyang' Nyong’o has given all the County workers two weeks off
duty to enable them mobilize their families and friends to register as
voters during this second ongoing Mass voter registration.
Speaking when today
in Kisumu when he met all the County employees, Prof Nyong'o asked each of the
workers to retreat to their respective wards and villages to spearhead the
voter listing campaign exercise that begun last Monday on January 17, 2022.
Nyong’o says this
is a civic duty for all Kenyans to register as voters to enable them exercise
their democratic rights during the forthcoming August General Elections hence
the need for all the residents of Kisumu County who have attained the age of 18
years and above register as voter and participate in the coming polls.
The Governor says
he has made the decision after learning that very few people were turning up to
register as voters in the county.
"The numbers
are disappointing. Our people must come out and register as voters," Prof
Nyong'o says.
He was
accompanied by his Deputy Dr Matthew Owili and County Assembly Speaker, Elisha
Oraro.
Governor Nyong’o’s
move comes barely a few days after ODM Leader Raila Odinga threatened while
addressing the residents of Homa Bay County last Friday to withdraw his
intention to vie for the Presidency the fifth time if the residents of Nyanza
region cannot turn up in large numbers to register as voters in preparations
for the polls slated in August.
Raila lamented that
there is slow pace in voter registration exercise in Nyanza region as compared
to other regions in the country in the ongoing second mass voter registration
exercise countrywide.
