Let all politicians hold rallies freely
without restrictions, Lawyer says
Politicians
have been told to hold rallies and do their campaigns freely without being restricted not to
visit some areas within the Country.
Former
President of the East African Law Society Senior Counsel James Aggrey Mwamu
says the issue of some politicians being restricted by their opponents not to
visit and campaign in some parts of the country is very wrong and should never
be allowed at all.
Addressing
the media at his office in Kisumu today, Mwamu said the Constitution of Kenya
2010 provides for the Freedom of Association, freedom of expression and Freedom
of Responsible Political gatherings.
“If
politicians from a certain political divide in a different political party want
to go to an area to express their political opinion, then they should be
allowed to do so without restrictions,” Mwamu says.
Mwamu says
serious political parties should allow other parties to practice political
democracy.
“It does
not mean that if other political parties come to your area then it is automatic
that they will convert the masses,” Mwamu adds.
Mwamu says
areas like Kisumu used to bear brunt of political Violence and there is no need
for some politicians to incite people to fight one another as the Country heads to the next General election in August 2027.
“Those
politicians who want to visit Kisumu should do so and express their political
opinion to the people who can make informed choices,” Mwamu further say.
Mwamu has
defended the people of Kisumu against the allegations that it is a city of
goons, adding that those driving such narrative want to paint the City in bad
light.
“Goons are
everywhere and to say Kisumu is a City of goons is not right at all and this
will drive away tourists who may want to visit the region while having a
glimpse of what the region entails as a tourists destination,” Mwamu further adds.
Mwamu's sentiments comes barely a few days after a section of politicians have flexed muscles while trying to restrict their opponents from visiting and holding a political rally in Kisumu.
The Linda Mwananchi has announced its intention to visit Kisumu and hold a political gathering in the Lake side City of Kisumu this Sunday.
