THE Kenya Urban Roads
Authority {KURA} has said it is not ignoring any road network within its
mandate.
KURA Director
General Eng.Silas Kinoti says their mandate is the maintainance and management
of roads within the urban areas with a major focus on roads within County Head
quarters.
He says they are
also constructing roads within county Headquarters which did not have tarmac
roads prior to devolution.
Speaking during a
press briefing in Kisumu on Tuesday, Chege said currently the Authority is
doing by-passes within the Kisii Town.
Kinoti says the by-passes will help to decongest the towns in terms of transport in and out of towns across the country.
He says the
authority’s focus is on maintenance in connection with collaborating with the
various county governments.
“As you are aware that by the year 2030, over
60 percent will be living in urban set up and we want to be part of the team
which will help in putting up the structures needed by these people especially
roads within the urban places,” he says.
He adds that
there should be proper management of traffic flows within Kisumu City,
management of the existing road networks within the Central Business District
is very vital.
He says a city
like Kisumu is now ripe for what is called intelligent transport systems
comprising of traffic signals which have artificial intelligence which can be
able to see the traffic flow within the city center.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure established by the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 with the core mandate of Management, Development, Rehabilitation and Maintenance of National urban trunk roads.
