Shs 135 million to be
used for Kachok Dumpsite upgrading.
THE County Government of Kisumu through the Kisumu Urban
Project {KUP} has set aside sh 135million for the rehabilitation of the
infamous Kisumu dumpsite.
Kisumu City Manager Dorris Ombara says the funding has been
set aside for the upgrading of the dumpsite once it is fully relocated to
Kajulu area, adding that the Kisumu Urban Project is funded by the French
Government.
Addressing the press during a tour at the site along
Kisumu-Nairobi road by Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o to assess the
progress made so far to relocate the solid waste from the dumpsite to Kajulu,
Ombara said the progress made so far in relocating the dumpsite is so far good
as solid waste from almost two acres from the dumpsite has been fully removed.
The City manager says once the relocation is fully completed
then they will start rehabilitating the site which will be changed into a
recreational park.
She says proper wall fencing will be done as well as putting
up a proper gate at the site.
Ombara adds that proper landscaping will also be done as
well as building ablution blocks, adding that the City Management is also going
to put up a weigh bridge there.
“We are also going to proper perimeter wall here as well as
rehabilitating this place so that if people come here they find a nice place to
rest while visiting our county of Kisumu and we are committing a budget of shs
135 million into all these,” Ombara says.
Ombara at the same time says KUP has also embarked on
building tarmac Roads at Kaloleni Estate within Kaloleni/Shauri Moyo ward being
represented by Prisca Misachi.
Ombara adds that the road is 2.1 kilometers and will be
completed by end of next month, adding that it will be upgraded to bitumen.
She adds that Nyamasaria-Magadi road is also being upgraded
into bitumen and works will soon be completed, adding that the road is about 3
kilometers.
Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o who has toured
and witness the progress made so far has said he is extremely happy with all
the steps from the relocating of the dumpsite to Kajulu area as well as the
upgrading of the roads mentioned so far in the various estates.
Governor Nyong’o says plans are underway to transform waste into
energy, adding that the dumpsite will be rehabilitated and changed into a
children’s park.
Nyong’o says exotic trees will also be planted at the park,
adding that plans are also underway to plant more trees within the county so as
to help in increasing the forest cover.
Nyong’o has praised the good work done by the City Manager
and her team, adding that proper service delivery to the people of Kisumu County
under his watch as the Governor of Kisumu will be fully realized.
“I have a competent team here and you have always seen them
while going to the field work every now and again and service delivery to the
people of Kisumu County is what we are here for. Let those who are making
unnecessary noise do so but ours here is to work for the people of this great
county of Kisumu,” Nyong’o says.
Relocation of the Kisumu Dumpsite which has been an eye
shore to investors has always hit a snag after some politicians have been seen
openly opposed to it.
This led to a court battle where some two residents of
Kajulu area went to court to stop it’s the relocation of the dumpsite to the
area and it was successful.
The county Government of Kisumu later appealed against the
ruling stopping the relocation of the dumpsite to Kajulu area and the Court
granted it a go ahead to relocate it.
According to the City Management of Kisumu, the relocation of the dumpsite begun last month
and will last nearly 90 days upon which all the wastes area expected to be
removed and the site be upgraded into a children’s
