We will implement Universal Health Coverage, Governor Nyong’o says.

THE County Government of Kisumu is set to implement Universal Health Coverage within the county, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has said.

The Governor says already four Counties in the country including Kisumu have been earmarked for the project on a pilot basis by the World Bank, adding that the other counties are Isiolo, Machakos and Nyeri.

He says the project by the World Bank will be in place within the next six months on a pilot basis.
Addressing the residents of Kisumu County at Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Ward during a tour of the area, Governor Nyong’o said the journey to have universal health care in the entire country begun when he served as the Minister for Medical Services in the then Grand Coalition Government and will now implement it at county level in Kisumu where he is now the Governor.

Nyong’o says the Universal Health Care means that every Kenyan must have affordable and quality health services, adding that this is the best when it comes to provide health services to the people.

Governor Nyong’o says plans are already underway to ensure that his county Government help those residents of Kisumu County who are poor to get the National Hospital Insurance Fund {NHIF} cards so that they will be able to get Universal Health Care when it will be rolled out.

“NHIF mostly covers inpatients but a number of Kenyans about 75 percent normally seek outpatient services which is not the case. This is why the universal health coverage is the way to go,” Governor Nyong’o says.

Nyong’o says that everything has been already put to cost in Kisumu County so as to ensure the smooth roll out of the Universal health coverage.

Governor Nyong’o says both the National and County Governments should ensure that the hospitals are well equipped with medicines and have enough staffs.

“We want to use the same universal health coverage in Cuba where the referral systems works perfectly, we will also be able to roll it here in the county and the country as a whole because even President Kenyatta has agreed to this to be implemented,” Nyong’o adds.
